London Public Library

This semester-long project was to create a new Public Library in the heart of London. My concept was derived from the rich history and diversity of the site and city of London. With our chosen site having close proximity to a number of worldwide known landmarks, I created my project based on views and reference to these landmarks. These included St. Paul's Cathedral, The Gherkin, The Shard, Tower Bridge and City Hall. I positioned my library towards the back end of our site lining the Thames River, allowing for a more open green space for pedestrians and tourists alike at the front of the site. This allows the public to enjoy a green space in the hectic city center, as well as draw them in from the street. The interior of the library is separated into three pavilions, the front public pavilion connecting to the 65m tall main library area, followed lastly in the rear of the site with public auditorium and gallery space. Connecting the main library to the back is an overheard walkway that also houses private office and administration space. Different portions of the library are thus angled and facing the chosen landmarks, giving nod to the rich history of the surrounding city.
