Shredding is a specific way to destroy the original geometry. This method offers a continuous interruption of one object, while remaining the previous texture, wrinkle, corners which are used to define what it was before. Pieces can be move, remodify and reassemble, which is similar to some “bugs” appearing in digital code or manipulating electronic devices. The dislocation density produces vague gaps and rolling surfaces. The new figuration is trying to represent a borderline between familarity and unfamilarity, which is still recognized to original geometry, but provide more blur about transition of texture and form. 

My project is a city concert hall in North China. The site offers three tall residential buildings very close to the main concert hall and a huge landscape in front of it. In this way, there were two basic logical clue for shredding in the beginning. The one is vertical cutting from the buildings in the background. The other one is the concert hall itself. Shredding offers a blur boundary between the new building and contest by the shred site. Meanwhile, the concert hall orgnazie its program by different shredding. The massing of building started with a composition of cubes and then it was deformed by shredding, which is on the opposite of a normal method to build up a coalition by several single objects. It happens not only on surface but also on structure and space, which is from intersection to boundary, from public space to certain program. Instead of making one complete seats surrounding of one theatre, seating is separated into several pieces hanging by massing. Single units occupy its own concave curves of transparent mesh for sound to easily pass through and reflect off. Shredding can be seen as a logical way to insert these seating by different height or angle.  It represents on the skin and the massing also define where every single unit should be at the same time. 

Visitors will perceive the vertical shredding when they get into the basement of the building, which is similar to walk in that front landscape. Space goes more and more fragmented until they get into the main theater. Visitors are separated into different groups to find out their own seating by shredding from the building. We can still recognize the original geometry before shred, which is used for gallery, lecture hall and office. But the composition of fragmented pieces shows up how this main theater inserted into it.

Shredding insert a completed theater into a composition of several objects by pieces. This method is not only a form language to deform objects and produce complexity but also a strategy to arrange visitors to get into theater by multi-entrance and path, Finally, it offers multiple seating surrounding the stage. It argues the absolute independent relationship between interior and exterior, form and function.
