Water and Light Market

Water and Light Market

"Water and Light Market" project, an innovative design
conceived under the Structural Design Studio during my second year
of university. This project responds to the theme "Structure within
Architecture" by proposing a temporary, pop-up market near the
Sussex County Cricket Ground in Hove. The market is designed to
serve cricket fans during the summer season, providing a vibrant
space for interaction before and after the games.

Central to this design is the use of a truss mechanism, inspired by
scaffolding structures, ensuring the market is lightweight, easily
assembled, and removable. The layout of the market was meticulously
planned to respect the residents’ view in the surrounding area. By
projecting a 20-degree angle (representing the typical human area of
focus) from each house window, the market's structure was positioned
and shaped to minimize visual obstruction. This careful consideration
ensures that the daily views, which is essential to the residents' quality
of life, remain largely undisturbed by the market's presence.

Moreover, the "Water and Light Market" addresses the site's
susceptibility to flooding by incorporating a future development plan. A
water channel beneath the street is designed to manage rainwater
effectively while adding an aesthetic dimension to the market. The
channel will be illuminated from below, casting reflections of the water
onto the market structure above, creating a dynamic interplay of light
and movement.

This project showcases a harmonious blend of functionality, aesthetics,
and community sensitivity, making it a valuable contribution to the
ongoing dialogue between structure and architecture.
