    A little bit about me

I just joined the blog project and wanted to offer some background. I'm a graduate student in Interior Design at Marymount University. Because I'm also working and raising children, I go to school part-time. I'm about half way through.

I've started my own company, BellDesign. I'm not ready for clients, but actually owning a business makes it much easier to get access to samples and information for my projects.

I've got my own blog, www.bellcr.com, which, in keeping with the rules, I'll mention infrequently. That blog chronicles not only my school experiences, but also my progress with BellDesign, thoughts on design and sustainability, my portfolio, and, eventually, some resource links.

In my past, I've been an environmental lawyer, a historic preservation consultant, the manager of an insurance agency, and the owner of a small gourmet cake business.

Spring semester starts next week. I'm taking Architectural History II and Furniture Design.

Also being a female business owner trying to raise kids, I look forward to hearing more about your experiences.

Being a single mom of three with a full-time job has its challenges (and now I'm a grad student to boot) and people are constantly saying "How do you do it?" The answer is that you set your priorities, hone your planner down to the minute, give up your notions of perfection, and forget about sleep and time for yourself. I chose mom-ness over business success while my kids were young because I wanted to be able to pick them up from school if they were sick, attend sports events, be home in the evenings, and let them know by more than words that they were my top priority. So I chose to earn my living in a non-challenging but flexible job until the children grew up. I'm convinced one can't succeed in a challenging professional job and do justice to the job of parenting. It's too much and one or the other has to give. Perhaps it is different with a spouse who is willing to share in the compromising, but I can't speak to that.

I could be a single mom about as easily as I could sprout wings and fly to daycare when I get the call that the kid has to go home sick...thank god for my husband who is very felxibly employed (which has its upsides and downsides...).

Single moms are the hardest working people in our society.

PS your daughter Kate is absolutely gorgeous!
