Architecture: A formal language of communicative drawings that display a plethora of ideologies and thought. These drawings, not limited by line, represent a broad culture of world thinkers and opportunities that are both challenging and thought provoking. The Venice Biennale is a consortium of some of the planet's diverse countries that practice architectural thought in a variety of different multitudes. Italy, a country not devoid of historical architectural themes or literature, is a major epicenter for artistic endeavors which makes it a perfect location for the Venice Biennale. However, to be critical, as home to the world's largest and most prestigious architectural exhibition, how does some of the most intense and creative work begin to disseminate into the world beyond the pavilions they inhabit? It is a question not only for Biennale but also the profession of architects whom are no longer visual stewards of society but also critical problem solvers. We have skills to no only draw buildings but also help communicate the realities of a variety of issues. As an American-Jamaican first generation college graduate, architecture for me is not a platform to just display formal complexities, but also how provocative thought can impact an approach to cultural competency and action. Taubman College has trained me to think within the fascinating issues of the discipline but also those not explored outside of it . My goal over the next few weeks is to highlight the projects that attempt to push the boundaries of how architects can communicate work not only specific to the discipline, but those issues that surround. Detroit and the several other locations of projects throughout the Biennale are a good start.
Six Taubman College M.Arch students were selected to assist the curators of the U.S. Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale in installing The Architectural Imagination. The students will travel to Venice for one month as Exhibition Fellows. They will serve as docents for the opening days of the exhibition.
