Hereford Inlet (Anglesea) Seawall

The Anglesea/North Wildwood seawall was originally built in 2009 with the purpose of providing coastal floor risk mitigation for homes along the Hereford Inlet. Over the years, erosion under the water’s edge of the wall has caused portions to collapse. When the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), the City of North Wildwood, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) awarded Agate Construction the contract to repair the damaged portions, the Big Apple Group was at the ready.

Seawalls are typically wide structures with a stone face intended to reduce wave damage and prevent flooding. Once repaired, the Anglesea Seawall will be more effective in preventing wave and flood damage.

In order to mitigate the continued erosion along the seawall, Agate was tasked with adding 211,000 square feet of Articulated Concrete Block (ACB) mattresses to protect adjacent structures from any potential ground borne vibrations caused by the addition of Articulated Concrete Block (ACB) mattresses, 5,000 tons of stone fill and 400 tons of 2-ton cap stone.

The Big Apple Group has provided a variety of services that include Pre-construction Surveys and Real-time Remote Vibration Monitoring to mitigate ground borne vibrations which could potentially affect the nearby homes. We monitor Agate Construction team activity on-site and report data in order for them to predict and precent potential damages to structures.

Seismographs have been strategically placed around the project site, the staging area and areas where heavy equipment will be operating. On a continuous basis, Big Apple records the peak particle velocity (PVS) generated by construction activities using fully automated remote vibration monitors. Allowable limits for this project have been established by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM RI 8507) and dictate when all work will stop if an alert is issued.
