Elkins Park, PA
BAU was hired to renovate four historic farm buildings spread throughout the park including the Dairy Barn and three homesteads. The buildings were built between 1764 and 1914 and are under the review of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). While the buildings are not currently on the National Register of Historic Places, they are classified as “Eligible”. All of the buildings BAU rehabilitated had suffered years of neglect and had significant damage due to weather, vandals, and animals along with various additions to the original buildings over time.
BAU conducted an analysis of the original buildings using historic photographs and descriptions along with architectural evidence within the buildings themselves to establish a clear outline of needed renovations. Due to budget constraints, BAU worked closely with PHMC to develop a stabilization and mothball strategy to preserve the buildings in accordance with The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties: Preservation Brief 31. BAU’s main objective was to restore these architectural treasures to the extent possible within the budget while effectively preserving them until additional funding can be secured for complete restoration and adaptive reuse of these buildings.
