Sloterdijk PARK-Station

With the Park Station project BARCODE Architects targets to radically transform today’s monotonous office neighbourhood of Amsterdam Sloterdijk into a new attractive and lively city destination.

The Amsterdam Sloterdijk area was intended to be a mixed-use high density zone surrounding an important multimodal station (Sloterdijk). With the current economic decline and a shift in focus to other locations around Amsterdam, such as the Zuidas business park, the area has stagnated as a mono-functional office park dominated by surface parking and vacant lots.
Large scale obstructive infrastructure cuts the area into 4 isolated fragments while also impeding links between the adjacent neighborhoods. The station itself has evolved as an accretion of disjointed and ill conceived “solutions”; it lacks recognizable orientation and clear wayfinding.

The multi-layered proposal of BARCODE Architects address these issues and aims with a single multifunctional urban gesture to give a clear and exciting new identity to Sloterdijk and its surroundings.

By consolidating parking within the deck of the Park Station, land becomes vacant to create a network of high quality public space and new mixed use development. The giant surface parking in front of the station is transformed into a green and lively public square which clearly clarifies the station entrance and orientation. The public space is extended into a large green elevated Park on top of the station, which foresees in various urban facilities for recreation and relaxation. In the plinth of the ‘Park-Station’ between the arches, spaces for commercial use are available, adding a new humanscale and quality impuls to the public space on groundlevel.

Together with the cohesive network of public spaces, the ‘Park-Station’ links spaces on either side of the multimodal knot, ties the 4 fragments together and connects them to the surrounding neighbourhoud. The area of Amsterdam Sloterdijk is no longer an isolated business park but a vital urban area which provides new opportunities for business and recreation.

BARCODE Architects: ‘The project Park-Station shows a quantum leap and quality transformation of the Amsterdam Sloterdijk area that for years now is characterized by Urban decline and social economic regression’.
