The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon, is a high-rise hotel project designed by Kengo Kuma with the vision of Ian Schrager. BAM had the honor to design the hotel’s highlight, a rooftop terrace overlooking Tokyo’s iconic skyline. BAM travelled to Japan and worked together with architects and interior designers to construct a luxurious green oasis that frames the city’s most famous landmarks such as the Tokyo Tower.
The 31st floor features the Jade Room Terrace for dining and bar guests to enjoy stunning south facing views overlooking the heart of Tokyo. The terrace features a spacious deck and seven tree planters clad in IPE wood. Over a series of nursery visits throughout the Saitama prefecture BAM located seven bamboo leaf oak trees for the deck. The trees’ superior wind resistance, drought tolerance, and evergreen canopy were key factors in addition to its aesthetic appeal.
Over three landscape terraces, the interior of the lobby, the lobby bar, and the hotel ground floor entrance, BAM specified over 725 pots and planters to fill the Toranomon Edition with a lush green landscape. Because most of this planting lives on the 31st and 32nd floors it requires a great deal of technical and structural coordination considering Tokyo’s typhoon exposure. The soil weight alone for all of the plants is roughly 130,000kg. Key species selected for the terraces include English Ivy, Camelia hedges, Autumn fern, Begonia, and Winter Daphne.
