The site of the Museum of the 20th Century is located in Berlin, in the middle of the Kulturforum, an area which shows a big variety in architecture and landscape. The Vertical Museum proposal concentrates all the new functions in a solid, new vertical stack, which is centered, compact and visible. The neutral volume is functional and has the required cubic capacity to receive the museums’ needs. The project focuses on its essential function, which is to connect art and the public. All exhibition spaces are housed on large open floors, free of any supportive structure. They allow a total flexibility. The Museum of the 20th Century along with the Neue Nationalgalerie enable the internationally important collections of the Nationalgalerie to be permanently and jointly exhibited for the first time, within spaces that provide continuity and contrast. The existing museum and the new one, should be linked by a connection at the lower level of the Neue Nationalgalerie. They will form a museum complex each one with their own entrances, functional areas of exhibition spaces, foyers, services. The lower garden is placed in the axis of the arrival from the Neue Nationalgalerie. It is a fresh break for the visit of Horizontal Museum. In the horizontal part of the Museum of the 20th Century, the exhibition naturally continues the art collections before 1945, along with a generous lower garden.
