Owing to the rapid growth of urbanization and concretization in the vastly populated city of Mumbai, open public spaces have become a dire necessity for the physical and mental upliftment of all the citizens. Atelier ARBO joined hands with the local authorities of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to rejuvenate and renew an old and derelict public space, named Jogger’s Park, located in Bandra, Mumbai.
The design was driven by a holistic approach to upgrade and renovate the entire park sprawled across an area of about 3 acres, as opposed to the common practice of merely cleaning up small portions of the park. Facing renovation after about 20 years of its initial development, the park’s new design was carefully planned around the existing walking track allocation to avoid any unnecessary intrusion. Considering the proximity of the park to the sea and the constant exposure to salty sea breeze, mindful selection of durable materials, like steel, for the construction of the hardscape elements was done to establish structures which can last for many years to come.
A public park is a highly enticing entity in the minds of children, who love to play and learn in the open environment of a garden. The former 2000 sq. ft. children play area consisting of four play components situated inside this park was transformed and enlarged into a 5500 sq. ft. arena with 13 play features and a soft, cushioned EPDM flooring to protect young kids from any fall injuries.
“The idea is to have a place filled with magic – a lively escape for the children which in turn will be a symbol of liberty, exploration, and endless imagination,” quotes Rinka D’Monte, principal architect of Atelier ARBO.
Upgradation of the walking track led to the use of three types of flooring materials, namely mud, EPDM, and stone, to enhance the experience of walkers and joggers frequenting the park for daily refreshment and physical activity. Part of the jogging track hosts a circular tensile roof to offer shade and respite in extreme weather conditions. Demarcating a separate gym space further elevated the opportunities of staying fit and active for the local residents and visitors of the park. Seating spaces provided at regular intervals along the track prove to be essential points of interaction and relaxation while appropriate signages displayed at required locations navigate visitors throughout the park with ease.
Understanding the importance of reviving old open spaces for the regular use and overall development of all the citizens of Mumbai, Atelier ARBO has taken active efforts in collaboration with local municipal authorities to spruce up yet another open public park. The firm aims to continue this journey of renewing public open spaces for the betterment and growth of the society.
