MUMOK, Viennas largest contemporary art museum and the start-up company Artefact – Mixed Reality Studio supported by the Wirtschaftagentur Vienna, are inaugurating a unique project this coming September in the main square of the Museumsquartier in Vienna. With the use of novel technologies and a unique design approach Artefact is transforming the place into a digital Eldorado. Visitors can experience on their smartphones via an augmented reality app a digital extension and alteration of the main museums building, which stands as an iconic dark monolith on one end of the main square. Reason for this intervention is a new strategy in communicating content and information regarding upcoming exhibitions of the museum itself and animating the courtyard hosting several other museums.
Artefact magically transforms the building of the architects Ortner and Ortner, by lifting a large corner piece and turning the building into a stage, to playfully engage with visitors. Interaction with the content bears further surprises. The app called mumokAR will be available from Googles Playstore and the Apple Store starting with the 18th of October, and can be used in the main square of the museums.

Artefact is a mixed reality studio telling stories in augmented reality. Artefact was founded in 2019, with the goal of creating unique interactive environments and interfaces for clients through custom apps. With the founders’ strong background in architecture and design, they utilize their existing knowledge and expertise within the built environment, to make an intelligent and believable mixed reality, expanding every story to its full immersive potential.
Artefact is led by Bence Pap together with co-founders Mathias Bank, Michael Knoll and Dieter Fellner. They have all graduated as architects from the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where they have been pioneering the use and implementation of augmented reality within our urban environments since 2015.The project mumokAR is funded by the City of Vienna by the Vienna Business Agency. A fund of the City of Vienna.
