Wroclaw, PL
The Local Activity Center is a facility whose purpose is to create and support social and cultural life in the area of Wrocław's Maślice. Residents needed a place that would be conducive to engaging in various local activities and building a sense of belonging to a given place. CAL is to become a new seat, friendly to all users, a space for meetings and learning, and the guarantee of its success is cooperation with the residents from the very beginning of shaping the project. The involvement of the Housing Estate Council (http://maslice.org) helped in the creation of a functional program, thanks to which a building adapted to the needs of the local community was created.
The facility is located in the immediate vicinity of the existing school and kindergarten complex at ul. Suwalska and is accessible both from its area and independently from the pedestrian and bicycle route connecting the neighboring residential complex.
In two wings of the Center building, connected with each other by a common entrance hall, it is planned to place such rooms as a small library with a reading room, two classrooms, an active senior club, a multi-functional room, the office of the Housing Estate Council and a complex of auxiliary and technical rooms.
Due to the economic assumptions regarding the method of implementation and functioning of the facility, appropriate design, and material solutions were adopted. The single-story building has a simple form resulting from the functional layout and the applied passive energy-saving strategies. The roof and the composition of glazing are the main means of expression, and the finishing materials are used to emphasize the modest expression of the building. A simple structural system with small spans allows for the economic implementation of the facility. Most of the internal partitions have been designed as lightweight skeleton walls to allow for future modification of the functional layout of the building in line with the changing needs of users.
Due to the small size of the plot, the planned building with its functional layout is adjusted to its shape and size. It is located in its central part, thus separating the entrance zone from the north and the recreation zone from the south. It is planned to create a complex of low greenery within the designated area and plant additional trees, shrubs and extensive greenery. Additionally, rain gardens are provided, which constitute a rainwater bio-retention system associated with a nearby drainage ditch.
