The historic significance of this public space, its location in the wider urban fabric of the city and its new role as an important node in the metro network are some of the main factors taken into consideration in the proposal. New access to the metro through the square at its north side-which also happens to be where the change of level takes place- permanently, transforms the square into a passage entry and exit point. New metro gates signify the arrival or departure point for the subterranean journey through the metro network that traverses the city.
Thus, the basic gesture occurs precisely there, where the outside world meets with the underground world in motion. At this point two basins contain water and”float” just slightly above the level of the Amalias venue pavement. These structures offer a reflective surface which brings the city into the square while underneath they further emphasize the public space. A new entrance to the square is proposed to occur at the diagonal axis in the form of a ramp that cuts through the water and winds itself underneath. This location proposes the nascent axis that connects the Acropolis to the Lycabettus hill, two classic reference points of the Athenian landscape. At the same time this passage proposes a different urban experience, one that “slows down” one’s movement while it addresses along the way all senses.
Using an architectural vocabulary, new qualities of pubic space and being suggested, such that might affect our understanding and reading of the city.
