Alexandra Perelman was born in U.S and raised in Lima, Peru. She studied architecture in Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas for two years, and then transferred to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. She was graduated from Pratt in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in architecture.
She can’t name the exact date she became aware of the structures around her, but in high school she found herself taking apart structures in her mind. She paid subtle attention to city buildings as they grew and evolved. Architecture as a discipline was at this point still unknown to her, but she loved the artistry in buildings and wished to participate in the process behind their creation. Her education, family values and extensive travels with architectural purposes have determined her character and life path.
Her favorite and most admired architect is the legend Le Corbusier. He changed the principles of architecture, using geometric shapes to cohere elegant structures. He introduced a certain environmental conscientiousness to architecture, without abandoning beauty. Another favorite is Mies van der Rohe, who famously declared, “Less is more.” This phrase has stayed with Alexandra since she started studying architecture and guides all of her work. All of van der Rohe’s designs reflect this fundamental idea in their extreme clarity and simplicity to produce a stunning minimalism. He reduced the structure of a building to create space for greater interaction between the user and the building. Alexandra’s own design mentality has been strongly influenced by van der Rohe’s innovations.
Despite her grand admiration for these two legends in architecture Alexandra’s work is influenced by Zaha Hadid, since she constantly pushes boundaries with conceptual and abstract plans. Through the use of fragmentation and amorphousness she creates structures that constantly challenge architectural convention for what it was known and giving it a different meaning. Just like these architects, Alexandra plans to call architectural norms into question and find new ways to express beauty through buildings with signature, revolutionary style.
