Winter Pavilion Hot Spring

Project Description:
Situated in the Northern Mid-West United States, in the rural open farm lands, is a
pavilion hot spring attraction to enjoy during the long winters. The structural pavilion
is open to the elements but provides a geothermal heating system within to warm the
environment, as does the podium structure. Both the pavilion structure and its base are fitted with integral lighting that emits heat to keep you warm, while you can enjoy the views of the untouched winter outdoor snowfall.

Project Design:
The forms are a derivative from nature. Specifically suited in contradiction of a warm
structure in a cold climate, the natural forms come from a tropical climate, the banana. The Pavilion takes on a general form of a banana in plan; however it is the slicing of a quad of bananas that evokes the primary form. This curvaceous quatrefoil like form is then organized and aggregated into a cellular structure that resembles the microscopic view of banana fibers in organic study. This occurs horizontally and is scaled vertically emphasizing the scales of each varied cell structure in the fibers. Completing the void between the simplified hexagonal cell structure podium and the canopy above are smaller quatrefoils stacked tightly together representing the void of gaps in the structure and its heart of smaller more compressed cells in the core of the banana fiber, creating the support for the open canopy. This fibers cell structure depicts a complex voronoi pattern throughout and was integrated into the larger quatrefoils as an added trellis for shade and reinforcing the pattern of both the simplified podium and its organic canopy.
