For twelve days, the art collective HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? occupied P! Gallery in downtown Manhattan in order to launch thewayblackmachine. net, an internet media archive of activism around black embodiment. This collective’s work addresses contemporary conditions, such as police brutality and the ways that memes and hashtags collect and make legible such threats to personhood. A(n) Office designed this conceptual and spatial intervention to use the gallery itself as a medium that extends onto the street. The exhibition design achieves this with multiple screens, projections, black walls, and void space. Various aspects of the exhibition, such as the opening time, were calibrated to maximize these effects. The design also maximized interior viewing potential by installing rear projection in a non-public space that functions for gallery administration.
