Misogyny has always been a part of the patriarchal society. In its least overt form misogyny manifests itself as prejudice against women who do not fall into one or more of the accepted categories like the mother/whore dichotomy. Several factors like literacy rates, sex ratio, political and religious biases have greatly influenced how women are treated across India. Education levels, fear of being silenced, media exposure, and age have emerged as the important predictors for some dimensions of women’s empowerment. Although empowering women is crucial, this alone will not suffice.
