As a fifth year thesis student, I decided to focus my research on education in low income neighborhoods.
Thesis Statement:
In a neighborhood where there is a low rate of graduates and a high rate of crimes; it is vital to find the source of the problem and propose a solution that helps both the community and the education system together.
Abstract:
Students from low income neighborhoods are deprived of a proper education at a young age.
These students are not given the same opportunity as their peers in a higher income public
school. One may assume that the root of this problem is solely based on the lack of financial
support and the rate of crimes within the neighborhood, but this study strives to prove that there is
an alternate problem which needs to be solved first. The research methods analyzed in this
investigation shows that there is a child developmental reasoning to the number of high school
dropouts in a “poor” or “unsafe” neighborhood. As a result, the solution proposes an education
facility that follows a renewed system which focuses on understanding the needs of the students.
As a designer, one must analyze both the site and its surroundings before proposing a
building; the same concept is applied in order to propose an educational facility and system that
relates directly to its environment. An architectural solution that focuses on the student’s needs,
the community’s needs, and the relationship between both. The proposal is meant to revive the
community and the school as they both work together through collaboration and interaction with
their common interests. Therefore, this thesis research describes the step by step process of an
architectural solution to a problem that can influence a change in not just the chosen site but other
neighborhoods in similar conditions.
