Noguchi Museum Ennex

Just like how Noguchi plays with the elements of exposure in his Avatar, Dumbos also use exposure as its feature to attract people.  The sound of Dumbo is the uncovered construction and traffic noise, but as you walk into the site, the sounds changes to quietness, this quietness is not really quietness, it is the result of exposed to more noise such as the sound of music and heat, and the noise of construction is still there as background.  It is through these exposed noises that people find the quietness.

Dumbo’s view to the river and bridges is a sudden exposure from the tall buildings and their shadow, yet this exposure is beautiful and peaceful.

In this exhibition space I want to use the element of exposure but to create a space that is comfortable and won’t feel uneasy.  I use transparent pipes and wires as a symbol of something people always try to hide, and use them as infrastructure of the space.  With strong, elastic, soft and curve shape of the pipes and wires, people are able to play in it.  With the curves of the pipes and wires, people can improvise their own usage of the space, hence they could expose the behavior they wouldn’t normally do in a public space.  This space is to make people comfortably expose themselves just like Noguchi’s piece Avatar and Dumbo.
