Historically, one of the primary purposes of ornament in architecture was to convey symbolic meaning.  Through time, the societal value of ornament depreciated and it is now viewed as a superfluous aspect of design.  Situated adjacent to and connecting with the Bayard Building, designed by Louis Sullivan, this project is a re-interpretation of the historic condition within a contemporary context.  The architectural implications of the ornamental system result from, and are validated through, the system’s level of responsiveness to environmental issues, internal functions, and structural requirements.  Additionally, the overall exterior building form and the interior volumetric relationships are reconsidered using current capacities of computation and a heightened environmental awareness.
