The Power of Air

The Power of Air as synonymous with Equitable Development and aims to
ensure the future of affordable housing in New York City and tie
together not only NYCHA, but whole neighborhoods. Through a re-imagined
marketplace, we can help address not only the deficit NYCHA is currently
facing, but can also ensure that the largest portfolio of affordable
housing in New York City has regenerative and vibrant growth in the
future.

NYCHA is currently going through the worst crisis in its history, with a deficit over $45.2 billion, due to the decaying and ill-maintained buildings in the city’s largest affordable housing portfolio. By 2027 more than 90% of the system could be beyond reasonable repair, and the lives of over 450,000 residents, most of whom are minorities, will be put at great risk of displacement. To address the crisis, the project proposes to utilize NYCHA’s historically underbuilt campuses and remaining air rights, leveraging them into a marketplace.

All the data in this project was processed through a combination of ArcGIS and Python, while the financial feasibility was tested through the development of a scalable proforma library for Python built for real estate, urban planning, and capital planning analysis.
