A semester long independent study studio project, the Tonne Winery Design Build was an intersection of architectural design, material exploration, manufacturer collaboration, and real-life experience. With a team of three students and the owners of Tonne Winery, a master plan for the outdoor tasting room of Tonne Winery was realized. The preexisting concrete pad provided little comfort or interest to the winery visitors, so a shading device was needed. Incorporating the winery owner’s love of ceder with inspiration from vineyard fencing and interest in custom connections, the pergola design provides both shade and a sense of scale and definition in the outdoor room. Custom seating and thin tasting bars help define the space between the parking lot and the tasting room while providing and enclosing new social spaces. Working with local fabricators such as welders, aluminum manufacturers, and a galvanization plant the project became a collaboration between client, students, and Muncie, Indiana’s best companies.
