Layered Enfilades
The project aims to create a different pattern of living through the use of horizontal enfilades, which creates equal, proportionate and homogenized spaces. The spaces break the conventional hierarchies present in the current living patterns and offer equilibrium and genericness to the layout.
Overall Thesis
Smuggling Perfection, Homogeneity and “Genericity”
The 3 Flat which I have designed is a reaction against the irregular, haphazard arrangement, and so-called pragmatic prevalence in the existing Chicago 3Flat type. The existing plans constantly present us with a collage-like assemblance of spaces within the plan and section. The rooms in precedents mostly , don’t speak or don’t relate to each other. They are almost always placed within the boundaries haphazardly. A wall in a level doesn’t relate to ones in other levels. The existing plans are absent of any idea of proportions. The existing typology lacks holistic integrity.
The spaces in the plans are made without geometric and spatial relationships. There is no order or clarity in them. They are almost always built in a fashion of “what-ever fits wherever” rather than establishing strong compositions with architectural sensibilities.
Living within the Enfilades
The horizontal approach to the plan translates into layered enfilades. The enfilades offer unique views and movement patterns within the building. The enfilade layout presents many challenges in terms of planning. The examples of challenges are; getting light into the space, stair access, rooms having connections to fresh air, movement, hierarchy of spaces and so on.
