Set within a 9600 sf renovated factory space in Emeryville, this San Francisco-area location for Counter Culture Coffee will be the base of the company’s West Coast operations and combines a coffee roaster, distribution space and training center. Programming that blurred the line between coffee creation, business, and education became important to allow a full experience for both workers and visitors.
Windows cut through the education and roasting areas to reinforce a connection with the production of coffee, while a wooden ribbon of modulating bleachers and storage snakes around the outer perimeter of the education space to provide utility and drama. Wood and white volumes complement each other as well as the industrial feel of the roaster space beyond.
