The clients, a family from the Netherlands, wanted the villa to be in close contact with the water channel that runs alongside his plot and connects it to the Mar Menor lagoon to the West and the Mediterranean Sea to the East. The villa is orientated towards the water, which lies on the north western side. There is a 3 meter cantilever over the covered external terrace that mediates between inside and outside, and shades the large sliding glass doors to the living room and kitchen.
An important feature of the house is the double height entrance hall with motorised windows at the top to allow for the chimney effect to bring the breeze into the house. Refer to the section drawing attached. The pressure difference allows the breeze to be regulated. During the hot Mediterranean summer, the solar powered air conditioning is rarely required.
The line of the cantilever coincides with the edge of the paving below, echoing Mies vd Rohe at the Barcelona Pavilion. We are waiting to take more pictures when the planting has grown.
The fence of the plot that overlooks the canal has large aluminium sliding doors that allow an almost total opening and direct visual connection between the pool and the canal, as required by the client's vision.
