  • They have been shortlisted among 286 submitted projects from 65 countries.
  • S Cube will compete in the Completed Buildings House category while GDIS will compete in the Future Projects Office category and New Sulaibikhat Center will compete in the Future Projects Health category.
  • The design firm has won two WAF awards in previous editions, 2011 and 2010, in the Future Projects category.

Three projects developed by AGi architects, a design firm led by architects Joaquin Perez-Goicoechea, Nasser Abulhasan and Salvador Cejudo, have been shortlisted by the World Architecture Festival to compete for WAF awards 2013 in different categories.

The selected projects are S Cube Chalet, General Department of Information System (GDIS) and New Sulaibikhat Center.

S Cube Chalet, winner of Residential Project of the Year at Middle East Architect Awards 2012, will compete against 15 projects for a WAF Award in the Completed Buildings House category, while GDIS will compete against six other projects in the Future Projects Office. New Sulaibikhat Center will compete in the Future Projects Health category against two other shortlisted works.

AGi architects, a Spain and Kuwait based practice, will present their projects to a panel of three WAF judges on the 2nd and 3rd of October at the festival in Singapore. The winners of each category are then asked to present once more on Friday, October 4th, to WAF’s super jury for one of the overall festival awards, World Building and Future Project of the Year.

“Being among the 174 shortlisted practices presenting live and competing in three different categories is a privilege and a great opportunity for us”, said Joaquín Pérez-Goicoechea, partner and co-founder of the firm.

S Cube Chalet
S Cube Chalet is one of the latest built projects by AGi architects, and winner of Residential Project of the Year at Middle East Architect Awards 2012.

S Cube family chalet is made up of three intertwined beach houses. The owners, two brothers and their sister each with their own families, want to continue enjoying the same exceptional environment in which they grew up in, but with complete independence and privacy from each other. For this reason, the design of these three small houses calls for a duplicated program which maintains privacy, while benefiting from outdoor areas and sea views by the use of several terraces.

GDIS
General Department of Information System, GDIS, is the last competition won by AGi architects in collaboration with Bonyan Design, in Kuwait in 2013. GDIS was also chosen to become part of the exhibition titled “On Tour. Spanish Architecture in the Arab World”, organized by Casa Arabe and the Spanish Higher Council of Architects (CSCAE), and it will be open until September 15th in Madrid.

With a total gross area of 135,482 sqm, the buildings aim is to create a strong civil icon representing Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior Affairs. The project is based on three principles: representativeness, security and functionality.

New Sulaibikhat Center
The New Sulaibikhat Center, currently under construction in Kuwait, stands as a pioneer in the healthcare sector. Challenging issues such as privacy and security are addressed using an innovative design process where courtyards attached to the façade are the driving element behind this unique typology. The concept of the façade generating light views and ventilation is reversed. The courtyards are brought inwards from the perimeter creating privacy which is enhanced by a metal mesh with a geometrical pattern allowing light to penetrate whilst constructing veiled threshold in between the exterior and the internal courtyards.

World Architecture Festival
World Architecture Festival is the world’s largest festival and live awards competition dedicated to celebrating and sharing architectural excellence from across the globe.

This year's theme for the World Architecture Festival is value and values. This subject will inform a talk series that will take place throughout the Festival. The talks will examine what architecture and other forms of design provide in terms of social, economic and environmental value; as well exploring the values that underpin the way designer’s think about the world. The 2013 edition will be held from 2nd to 4th of October in Singapore
