This studio focuses on proposing a multi-functional facility that promotes recreational activities at the French Broad River Park. The site is located by the French Broad River and is a vast green space with old trees, paved trails, and observation decks to the river.
The design includes sustainable materials, which are mostly concrete made of portland-limestone cement (PLC) to enhance performance. Specifically, PLC contains between 5% and 15% limestone that increases hydration efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions while remains strength performance of concrete.
The project also concerns sustainable approaches for the site design. Around the building, retention ponds collect and store stormwater flowing down from the hill. Porous pavements help collect and keep stormwater for indoor services. Bioswales alongside bike paths filter stormwater before the water flows back to the river.
