The Iowa Institute for Biomedical Discovery (IIBD) is the third building of the Biomedical Research Center on the Medical Campus, forming a “U” plan configuration, fronting Newton Road and overviewing the University of Iowa Campus. Closing the “U” with a covered ground level outdoor connection and enclosed second level linear gallery space creates a new quadrangle anchoring and interconnecting the complex around a major pedestrian space. The “cloister” also separates the existing vehicular circulation, which further reinforces the presence and identity of the complex. The existing materiality of Iowa limestone, copper, aluminum and glass is maintained in the IIBD building with the campus fronting east facade, presenting an iconic reference, articulated by vertical bay windows and a recessed roof terrace, rendering a deep cornice to the campus, which defines the new image of the Center.
