Jersey City has a rich history of art and theater. When we were prompted to design a theater in Jersey City, we first had to understand what exactly theater meant. The art of theater combines 3 major skills: music, dance, and acting. When these three are melted together, they can create something magical. Combining the structure of music, the movement of dance, and the drama of acting, I utilized three components that would make up The Curtain Theater. The open light structure is protected by a flowing curtain, meant to symbolize a curtain lifting from a stage floor, which supports dramatic cantilevers on either end. In addition to these three elements, I focused on potential views and access to light which are both integral to our site. This led to a triple-high atrium that enclosed circulation and offered views to the west. More views are see from all sides of the theater, including a view of Manhattan from the audience.
