AB Architekten is an award-winning, full-service architecture and design firm located in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The office is engaged in a diverse range of work including residential, mixed-use, and commercial development in New York City and on Long Island. The scale of these projects ranges from master planning to interior remodeling.
Since its inception, the firm has been committed to the local community and has recently become involved in pro bono work through DesigNYC and Architecture for Humanity. This work has included master planning for the Fulton Area Business Alliance in the Bedford Stuyvesant, Fort Greene, and Clinton Hill areas of Brooklyn, as well as housing design in flood-damaged areas on Staten Island and Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.
AB Architekten was founded in 2003 by partners Matthias Altwicker and Alexander Blakely. Their combined experience includes design and construction of residential, commercial, and educational projects in the United States and Europe. They have been particularly committed to environmentally conscious building design with a focus on implementing solar energy systems. Locally they are consultants to the Nassau County Planning Federation and members of the Sustainable Long Island Design Assistance Team. They have received grants to conduct photovoltaic research projects with Long Island Power Authority and the New York Institute of Technology. In 2013 Matthias Altwicker left the firm to pursue independent work. He maintains relations with AB Architekten and continues to engage with the office in architectural discourse.
