The Lerner Children's Pavilion @ The Hospital for Special Surgery

A 38,000 square foot state of the art facility filled with care, comfort and wonderment. This will be New York City’s first specialized pediatric orthopedic and rheumatology center.

The Pavilion is a comprehensive in-patient/out-patient center with its own radiological suite, expansive pediatric rehab gym and parent education accommodations.

The center integrates a variety of unique design elements to both engage the patients and their siblings as well as comfort and inform the parents. An abstraction of nature provides the overall design theme and great care has been taken to develop a design that provides interactive elements that cater to the very young patient as well as elements that the adolescent patients can appreciate. The pavilion serves a broad range in age, newborn to 18 years, and many patients visit the facility from infancy through adolescence. A key design element in the waiting area is the larger than life aquarium wall composed of LED lighting effects and aquatic life projections that create a soothing and engaging undersea world backdrop.

Special LED lighting coves, whose imagery changes seasonally, are utilized in select areas of the center to provide natural wayfinding cues and enliven the space. Custom designed carved Corian wall panels, with a playful nature motif, line the primary corridors and this motif is integrated throughout the center on items such as cubicle curtain fabrics and exam room furniture.

The Children’s Pavilion is designed to achieve LEED Certified status.
