Studio G Architects announces that Sylvia Mihich, firm Principal and Director of Practice retired effective January 27, 2021.

Sylvia brought her passion for maximizing design opportunities and creatively solving problems to over 20 years of work with Studio G. She played a critical role on a wide variety of projects, from feasibility studies to multi-million-dollar design/construction projects.

Sylvia’s school projects illustrate her dedication to bringing 21st century learning environments to students and communities around the Commonwealth. They include K-12 and early learning environments such as Boston Prep and Excel Academy, Boston Public School’s Greater Egleston Community High School, and Crispus Attucks Child Care Center. Most recently, she served as the Principal for the feasibility study and schematic design of a new Florence Roche Elementary School in collaboration with the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District and the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

Always interested in multiple project types, she strove to improve the daily lives of residents in affordable and mixed income housing for local housing authorities and non-profits, such as Cambridge Housing Authority’s Corcoran Park Redevelopment,  270 Centre, and E+ Highland multi-family housing. She designed the headquarters for the statewide housing advocacy organization, Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance (MAHA).

“Sylvia and I became friends at the BAC when we were both testing a path in architecture.  I left for MIT, she stayed at BAC then moved to California for a decade. When she returned, I invited her to join Studio G, confidant that our shared vision of socially engaged architecture serving those in greatest need with ecological, people-centered design was the best foundation for a partnership. 

Sylvia has had a tremendous impact on Studio G – in charting our path, in the quality of our design practice, and in ensuring that projects are built as designed.  Moreover, she has been a steadfast mentor to countless junior staff over the last 21 years.” said Gail Sullivan.

Studio G moves forward under the continued leadership of Founder Gail Sullivan and Associates Anelise Bateson and Steven Michener. Anelise and Steven lead the Housing and School/Institutional studios within the firm respectively, managing projects, meeting client needs, mentoring staff, and supporting firm strategy.

“Despite the upheaval of a global pandemic, Studio G’s team has managed to continue our work without missing a beat, due to the collaborative strength of our team and partners. Construction of Excel Academy Middle School was just completed and the DMH Taunton Men’s Recovery from Addiction Program will be occupied in July. Our housing studio will complete design of E+ Highland net zero energy housing and Heading Home supportive housing this spring, and we look forward to an affirmative town vote in the spring for the Florence Roche Elementary School. Studio G is well-positioned for the future.” said Sullivan.
