La Barceloneta, the characteristic fishing neighborhood adjacent to Port Olimpic, is a threshold of culture between Barcelona’s resident and tourist population. Three systems of movement - the gridded Barceloneta, the Passeig Maritim, and the Barceloneta Beach - provide a base for an operative map that reveals new realities and patterns of movement throughout the area. The resultant opportunity areas are designed to intertwine each of these three systems, literally reintroducing the Mediterranean Sea into La Barceloneta and increasing the pedestrian spontaneity that is so indicitave of successful urban design. Through a “push-pull” gesture, the Passeig Maritim promenade is broken, and new experiences of the beach and marketplace are created.
