For this live project we were to give Dance City an 'uplift', considering all four floors in our design. On the ground floor there was an entrance/reception area, a Cafe and an open space for where dancers can practise routines etc., on the first floor there was a 'waiting' area and offices, the second floor linked with the first floor in height, and the third floor gave access to the roof terrace. In the centre there is a void that spans across all floors. Our task was to give particular areas an 'unlift' whilst also incorporating a plan for an exhibition space, of which would be used to display the works of six students that get chosen to present after hand-in.
If a dancer were to be thrown, and that freeze-frame were to be captured... What would happen if something hot were to be suddenly cooled down?
With that concept in mind, I was able to create these concept models using melted wax and throwing this substance into a bottle of cold water. The parts further into the water cool down straight away, of which in the final model I used a stick to push the wax further into the water to create a larger structure.
Thinking of how I could create and installation in the centre of the void led me to finding photographer Mark Mawson, who takes photographs of paint or ink being thrown into water. These looked similar to my candlewax models, except smoother. This gave me the idea of creating an installation using fabric, and with the idea of movement in mind, possibly creating an installation that could 'move' throughout the day so that not every position was the same.
The idea of the 'pulley technique' got me thinking about the exhibition space and about using the same idea to show some of the pieces and/or boards. The customers could use the pulleys to lower a piece and/or board they wish to view.
On Monday 13th February it was announced that I had been chosen, along with 6 other of my peers, to present my work to the Manager and Creative Director for Dance City the next day at 9.30am. We were chosen based on an A4 board relating to our project, of which we had to chose an image(s) that best described our project, with a description underneath consisting of no more than 100 words.
On the day of Tuesday 14th February each of us, starting with myself, had to present our work in front of the Manager and Creative Director for Dance City and two of our tutors. We each had roughly 10 minutes to present work from our boards and anything else we wanted to show; I also brought with me my material board, concept models and final model. After this we were given feedback. I found my presentation went really well, my design was liked; particularly how the cafe had been opened up into the main foyer space. Once all of the presentations were complete, a decision was made as to which one of us had produced the best outcome. My peer Amani was announced the winner. I was glad I had the opportunity of presenting my work to a possible client as this has given me more experience and confidence of presenting my work to people other than my tutors or classmates.
