The College of Idaho tasked us to “transform the library from a cloistered space for quiet learning into a dynamic complex for intellectual exchange – an intellectual commons that draws together the realms of liberal learning.” True to the College’s original vision statement, this hybrid academic library building is a naturally lit, airy, and inviting space that gives the students the sense of being surrounded by something bigger than themselves.
The sustainable building approach uses both passive and active measures to reduce the building’s energy consumption. The exterior skin is an insulated glass curtain wall shaded by a series of perforated metal shade fins arranged to accept natural light into the interior spaces at the appropriate times of the year and throughout each day. A geothermal heat pump system reduces operating costs, extends mechanical system life, and reduces life-cycle cost. Using BIM-based energy modeling methods, the building is projected to exceed energy efficiency code requirements by 61%.
Future technology and teaching needs are accommodated via a flexible floor plan utilizing raised access flooring for distribution of ventilation and utilities. Classroom and small group study spaces feature touch screen technology with wireless presentation and collaboration capabilities, along with powered furniture providing flexible plug-and-play arrangements suited to a variety of learning environments. We worked closely with the College to program, design, budget for, and construct unassigned collaboration zones where interdisciplinary College faculty members can develop new curriculums with the library and technology staff, and then test and refine these emerging pedagogical approaches in the building’s classrooms.
