Halifax Explosion Markers

These thoughtfully designed Markers are meant to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the devastating tragedy of the Halifax Explosion, which took place in the early morning of December 6, 1917. The purpose of the Markers was to tell the story of those affected bythe disaster and to high light the extraordinary resilience since that time. An important consideration in the development of this project was in determining where to locate the Markers to most accurately re-tell the story. The first step in doing this involved great amounts of research through speaking with local community groups, carefully combing through archives, and reading first-hand accounts of the event, which was conducted by the HRM staff. The north end was indeed the epicentre of the blast, but the effects of the tragedy were much more far-reaching with a destruction radius of many kilometres. Dangerous shrapneland debris were thrown in all directions, from the Dingle Tower on the North West Arm all the way to Albro Lake on the other side of the harbour. From this map,we pin pointed areas of particular interest and toured each and every site. At this point in the design process, we had dozens of potential sites throughout the entire radius of the disaster, and by physically touring every one of them, we were able to begin narrowing down the most appropriate locations. When we visited each site, considerations included: public access (zoning, publicly vs. privately owned land), visibility, universal accessibility, and significance of the story that was linked to the location. We worked alongside the client to determine twelve final locations. These include three prominent locations within the newly completed Fort Needham Park, a public park dedicated to those affected by the Halifax Explosion,  and nine other sites throughout Halifax, Dartmouth, and Bedford. This ensures that all residents have the story of the impact on their neighbourhood told. It also means that the greatest number of people will be exposed to these Markers and the stories they tell, educating all residents and visitors about this important piece of history that shaped our city.
