About

Architecture is a backdrop that can enliven and enrich the human experience. As a young designer, I aspire to play a part in creating that backdrop, and as such, I am committed to continued learning and growth within the profession.

Employment

HGF Architects, Inc., Pueblo, CO, US, Architectural Intern

I worked with project managers and firm principals on a number of educational, commercial, and health care facilities at various phases of the design and construction process.

I produced an as-built drawing set needed for HVAC/electrical upgrades on a 3-story, historic school building. Working off of drawings completed by three different architects over the span of six decades helped me to become acquainted with graphical representation standards and how to read construction documents. On-site investigations and measurements challenged me to think about the anatomy of a building and how its systems operate. Producing the as-built drawing set in Revit allowed me to significantly expand my command of the software.

I developed schematic designs, a set of design development drawings, and renderings for client presentations for a 9-unit retail condominium project. This involved familiarizing myself with zoning requirements and restrictions, PUD design guidelines, civil and structural engineering reports and drawings, and the overall constructability of a building. This project challenged me to synthesize structure and materiality into a beautiful and cost-effective design.

I observed and participated in the construction administration of two new 1,200 student high schools in several capacities. I crosschecked project specifications with chosen materials for various masonry and roofing elements, aided in the management of deferred state code review submittals, and engaged in a number of site visits. These projects gave me the opportunity to see what effective coordination between stakeholders, contractors, engineering consultants, and an architecture office looks like.

Education

University of Colorado at Boulder, Boulder, CO, US, Bachelors, Environmental Design, Architecture

The Program in Environmental Design at the University of Colorado, Boulder is a 4-year, interdisciplinary design degree that offers four different majors.

The major in Architecture is comprised of 8 semesters of design studios, with 5 semesters of architecture-focused studios. The curriculum also includes Rhino and Revit coursework, as well as in architectural history, materials, structure, and sustainable building system design.

As a student in the program, I had the privileged of studying under the guidance of several licensed and award-winning architects, as well as professionals in the fields of urban planning and landscape architecture. This comprehensive education gave me a sense of the building as part of a greater whole within the schemes of the built and natural environments.
