San Diego—June 8, 2012—NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) announced that award-winning architect Marvin Malecha, dean of the College of Design at North Carolina State University, will deliver the keynote address at NSAD’s commencement ceremony. About 140 students will receive degrees at the ceremony scheduled for Saturday, June 23, at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego.

In addition to graduates receiving their Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees, several members of the first graduating class of students in the school’s  Master of Construction Management program and Bachelor of Science in Digital Media Arts program will participate in the ceremony. Students in these programs are scheduled to complete their studies in the summer. The Bachelor of Science in Digital Media Arts program was established in 2009, and the Master of Construction Management program, which is offered entirely online, started in 2011.

Malecha received the prestigious Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in 2003. He is a former president of the AIA and a former president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Malecha’s many honors include the 2007 James Haecker Distinguished Leadership Award for Architectural Research from the board of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC), and the national William R. and June Dale Prize for Excellence in Urban Planning in 2008 from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.  He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and is a member of the NSAD Board of Directors.

 Malecha has served on the National Architectural Accrediting Board and the California Council of Architectural Education. Prior to becoming dean of the College of Design at North Carolina State University in 1994, Malecha was dean of the College of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University.
