NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego (NSAD) is accepting applications for the five-week Summer Exploratory program, an intensive curriculum for students interested in learning more about the fields of architecture, landscape architecture and design. The program, which lasts from July 16-August 16, is open to high school or college students, as well as anyone who is considering a career change or a degree program in architecture and related fields.

 Students in the Summer Exploratory program learn the principles of drawing and sketching, design, model making, Photoshop, AutoCAD & Sketchup, sustainable design, architectural history and theory, urban planning, and site analysis. No previous experience is required. Students have the opportunity to develop portfolios they can use when applying to schools of architecture, design, or fine arts.

Classes run Monday through Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the NSAD campus in San Diego. Activities include discussions, lectures, field trips, and design studio challenges. On Fridays, students are encouraged to work on their studio projects because they will be expected to present their work to the NSAD community at the end of the program. This year, students are invited to participate, at an additional cost, in an optional surfing class.

High school students must be at least 16 years old and must have completed their sophomore year before participating in the program.  International students must be at least 16 years old and must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by meeting minimum test scores required of international applicants. Tuition for the 2012 Summer Exploratory Program after the initial June 18 application deadline is $1,995. The cost does not include housing.
