About

With over 14 years of professional experience across a broad spectrum of scales and typologies, Matt has been an influential leader and advocate for design. His designs have sought to take on complex problems that require uniquely refined and elegant solutions within modest means.

Before joining Specht Architects, Matt worked at an Austin based boutique residential architecture office, where he managed some of the firm’s largest and high-profile projects. These projects served as case studies that he developed into office-wide standards, procedures, and details, streamlining project deliveries for other teams.

Matt received his Bachelor of Architecture at Kent State University and his Master of Architecture at Ohio State University. Upon graduation, he joined Robert Maschke Architects (RMA) in Cleveland, Ohio. At RMA, he was responsible for the design and execution of many award-winning projects that have been widely published. Matt’s contributions guided the transition of RMA’s design dialogue from an analog to a digital studio. In 2015, Matt was the recipient of the Emerging Professional Award from the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Cleveland, Ohio) for recognition as an outstanding member of the next generation of leaders, contributing to the workplace and further developing the profession of Architecture.

Employment

Robert Maschke Architects, Cleveland, OH, US, Managing Director

I joined Robert Maschke Architects in 2006 and over the past 12 years, I have been responsible for the design and execution of many award-winning projects, published nationally and internationally. Irrespective of scale and typology, ranging from sculptural follies to private residences, higher education facilities, and commercial spaces; each project’s unique constraints inform exceptional design solutions within modest means. My design and research focus on the architectural effects of origami-like folding to delineate volumetric enclosure and strategically blur interior and exterior distinctions.

In 2015 I was the recipient of the Emerging Professional Award from the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for recognition as an outstanding member of the next generation of leaders, contributing to the workplace and further developing the profession of Architecture.

My expertise in a broad range of design and fabrication hardware and software has guided the transition of RMA's design dialogue from an analog to a digital studio. Implementing fabrication techniques in modeling and construction to develop uniquely resourceful and efficient solutions to complex spatial and aesthetic constraints. The ongoing discourse of architecture in and around our studio strategically draws upon contemporary architectural precedent and research.

I spent a semester abroad in Florence, Italy studying architecture while receiving my B.Arch from Kent State University. I received M.Arch from The Ohio State University, Knowlton School, where I was selected to join the US Pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. I returned in 2016 to continue my research in Venice, Italy, and the surrounding region.
