Located in the eastern section of West Hollywood, Gardner1050 is a result of studies in reinvigorating existing housing typologies to create new opportunities for living, within the extremely tight economic and spatial parameters of the speculative housing market. This project explores alternative approaches to the courtyard housing typology.
Weaving the building's circulation into a spectrum of public space, the central courtyard allows all units to have direct access from the exterior, and eliminates the need for mechanically climate-controlled corridors.
In an effort to extend the courtyard vertically, stainless-steel cables creep up to the third level walkways, forming scaffolding for a hanging garden. Landscaped with native drought-tolerant species, this foliage extends the landscape to the floors above while filtering the strong California sunlight.
