Li Heyi(Jimmy) (LEED AP BD+C), currently as an architectural designer in Perkinswill Los Angeles office, got his master degree of architecture in UCLA, Studio Greg Lynn in 2015. He is very interested in applications of advanced technology on architecture, such as robotic fabrication, composite material, digital working flow and dynamic structure.

Despite all the moving parts in any building, from doors and windows to elevators, architecture assumes that people and things move while buildings remain static. One of the ways people are provoked to move is by spatial inflection and formal gestures. This idea of buildings being imbued with dynamism is an old idea. When deciding what small percentage of a room moves, the question of the relationship between the moving elements and the static elements was posed at the outset. A main focus of the year was the relationship between literal motion and phenomenal motion. The studio explored reorientation and movement of spaces and rooms at a variety of scales but always from the inside out.

Spaces defined by structural beauty, are attractive to people and help to visually orient visitors. By designing spaces through human activity research, we can make architecture effective and appropriate to use. However, in the age of Web 2.0, the role of architecture and its necessary qualities are changing. They are awaiting our exploration. I hope to investigate these three areas through my graduate studies to further my goal of designing attractive and effective spaces for people in new age.
