Long commutes, traffic congestion, and polluted air have been a scourge on urban life for far too long. But what if we could make urban living less stressful and more sustainable? That’s the idea behind the 15 Minute City – a city where all essential destinations, such as schools, shops, offices, entertainment venues, and healthcare facilities, can be reached within a 15-minute walk, cycle, or public transit ride.
Affordable, accessible, and adaptable housing, fresh groceries, and other amenities are also key features of a 15 Minute City. Working from home or close to home can also help to reclaim our time, health, and well-being while fostering more inclusive communities. Several major cities, such as Paris, Melbourne, Detroit, Portland, and Ottawa, are already embracing similar concepts.
The proposed city intervention is located in the middle of Mumbai city Suburb which is currently divided by the city’s most old River Mithi.
The following proposal focuses on connecting this area by using River Mithi as a adhesive to the three most important income generating colonies in Mumbai i.e Bandra Kurla Complex, Bandra East and Dharavi.
Considering the current covid-19 pandemic conditions these areas which were otherwise highly populated due to their geographical location and businesses held here.
As pandemic lead to lockdowns the area were either dead or had become a source of high risk of infection.
The proposed layout consists of places which cater day to day activities, helps in sustainable living, has spaces which can adapt to conditions, resilient and easy for pedestrians and bicycle owners.
The goal of The 15 Minute City is to enhance people’s quality of life by developing urban neighbourhoods where residents can get to anything they need in 15 minutes or less by public transportation, bicycle, or foot. In order to do this, we must carefully plan at the neighbourhood level, ensuring that every district has the amenities necessary to sustain a complete existence. This includes building houses, healthcare facilities, small companies, green space, food, employment, and more.
