My name is Frederick De Ryck, I am a Belgian architect fascinated by architectural design and its ability to influence our living environment.

In July of 2013 I graduated cum laude in the International Master of Architecture at the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium. It is here that I gained skills in critical thinking and conceptual design. During my educational career, i have made it my goal to understand what makes any space into a place, whether it is a room or a public square. A place being somewhere that people feel at ease and are able to claim as their own. To me architecture isn’t just about creating buildings, but about creating a successful, livable and socially sustainable environment for people. As an architect I am thrilled to have the opportunity to make towns and cities the best they can be.

The curriculum of the International Master of Science in Architecture programme consists of the following course units:

History and Theory aims to define architecture within a broader cultural, theoretical and historical context of mankind and its world. The course has an interdisciplinary approach towards the phenomena of architecture and urbanism.

Building Technology is crucial to achieving qualitative architecture. The aim is to create sustainable, coherent and intelligent architecture projects with the help of technology.

Building Management covers topics such as law, economy, management processes and ethics. Students follow the international evolution of the profession with the aid of case studies, seminars and input from professionals.

The Design Studios are the core of the programme providing an interactive and open design environment, accommodating students from around the world. The Design Studios are set up as interdisciplinary and coherent modules. The design activity is reinforced through theoretical components enabling a dynamic, cohesive and sustainable approach. Throughout the Design Studio sessions, students work either in small, highly international teams or individually.

International Workshops, Electives, Seminars, Excursions, Exhibitions and Lecture Series are considered a structural part of the programme and related to its contents.

In the final semester, master students complete their study programme with a design project and reflection paper developed in close collaboration with one of the department's research laboratories. The knowledge, competences and methodologies acquired in the previous semesters enable master students to formulate an individual research topic embedded within the laboratories' fields of research and expertise. The end result is a highly qualitative (urban) architectural project.

The Master dissertation project counts for 25 ECTS. All final projects are evaluated by the teaching staff and an external international jury.

The minimum duration of the programme is two years (four academic semesters) but the curriculum can be spread out over a longer period contingent upon obtained results or in case the student desires to combine the programme with some kind of practice.

Philosophy: The Brundtland report (United Nations, 1987) defines sustainable development as ‘development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'. The United Nations in 2005 referred to the ‘interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars' of sustainable development as economic development, social development and environmental protection.

Translating these three pillars for sustainable architecture, they would entail: providing access to high quality and healthy living and working environments for all, finding ways to create socially sustainable environments at different scales and a wise use of natural resources. Technical considerations, together with more conceptual or strategic issues, are dealt with in this two-year program about architecture and sustainability.

Based on a highly interdisciplinary learning process of integrated research, students are expected to elaborate a theoretical stance on current issues with particular emphasis on how aspects of sustainability, universal design, urban ecology and energy-efficient technologies may contribute to the development of more sustainable architecture for human settlements. Critical reflection about architecture and its social, cultural and environmental role for society is central to the programme.

The Master of Community Planning (MCP) program is a two-year professional program that accommodates various geographic scales as well as different planning subjects related to planning and the design of innovative futures. The program recognizes the wide range of students’ undergraduate backgrounds and trains professionals for distinguished practice in planning and development. It integrates academic and professional practice with a deep concern for community development and environmental quality. A special feature of the program is global exposure and opportunities provided by several School of Planning programs, including two in association with the Peace Corps. The school also offers joint degrees with the Department of Geography and the College of Law.

The degree prepares students for the professional practice of planning at local, regional, state and federal levels of government and within the private sector with a planning consultant, land developer, law firm, economic development agency/corporation or other business.

Additional learning opportunities include a summer abroad or exchange programs with universities in the Netherlands or Turkey. Through the university’s certificate programs, Master of Community Planning students can add a focus area such as real estate, area studies, a foreign language, planning, and historic preservation.

All architecture, from the bigger scale of urban architectural design to the smaller scale of the interior, should be created against the background of a deep historical and cultural understanding. The learning environment of Sint-Lucas is interdisciplinary and integrative and stimulates a nuanced critical reflection on the discipline. In a personally developed educational path, the student can focus on the design and realisation of a concrete building, on the scale of an urban architectural design or on the development of design strategies and models in function of a prospective architecture for the future.

Courses on structure and construction offer an insight on aspects of structural dimension, structural efficiency and the possibilities of structure as a potent tool in the creation of form and space. Students are trained to design technically qualitative, sustainable and interesting buildings.

To attain the important spatial insight as well as the visualization of the designed space, different necessary skills are being perfected. It is essential to stimulate the personal expressive and artistic capacity to achieve a visual way to create and think in an authentic way. The final outcome is the ability and competence to design architecture. This is a syncretic activity that can merge completely different, even conflicting and temporal factors, into one concept. Architecture is shaping objectives and values, shaping the formal and spatial solution of needs and problems. However, architecture is primarily also a form of social art.

Finally, the program also tackles on-the-job implications. In the light of the intricate occupational process and the fast changing careers environment, the student learns to adapt a suitable approach to analysing recurring problems, taking the right decision and supervising the progress of building activities.
