Barcode House

Converting garages and backyard space into accessory dwelling units (ADU’s) is not a new idea. However, Barcode House uniquely boils down “living” to the most essential module-strips, which rearrange to achieve programmatic flexibility directly addressing residents’ unique needs. The modularity factor also grants users a sense of control and belonging which is an important step forward for homeless individuals. Like a binary barcode with varying widths, 2’,  4’, and 8’ interior volumes are connected by intentional slices of light in endless iterations, all the while making design more accessible to poorer communities; the deliberate sizing of affordable materials like simple steel frames and wooden platform infills maximizes cost-efficiency. The larger societal problem this tackles is NIMBYism, which might break down as communities form in the largely privatized backyards of Los Angeles.
