MILWAUKEE, WI, May 9, 2019 — Two EUA projects have been recognized for excellence in architectural design by the 2019 Design Awards program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The Mercantile Building addition was awarded an AIA Merit award and the Discovery World addition and remodel was awarded an AIA Honor award.

Originally built in 1909, the Mercantile Building in Milwaukee’s Third Ward added a five-story addition to include first floor retail and four floors of office space that connects to the existing 50,000 sq ft structure. A modern interpretation of the historic neighborhood’s material use, rhythms and patterns, the addition is modern in personality and amenities featuring soaring spaces with abundant daylight, exposed structure and an expansive rooftop deck with lake views. EUA also worked with building tenant Hanson Dodge Creative, an advertising agency, to refresh their space and consolidate its operations onto one contiguous floor.

Located on the shoreline of Lake Michigan with prime views of Milwaukee’s skyline, Discovery World, an educational science and technology center, recently expanded and renovated their space to serve a larger number of visitors and offer additional educational programming for children. The expansion included a 10,000 sq ft pavilion and increased exhibition space. The new multipurpose pavilion provides the museum with a space for special events, educational programming, traveling shows and lunchroom for school trips

AIA Design Awards are presented in two categories. Honor Awards recognize overall design excellence. Merit Awards recognize excellence in a particular aspect of project design, such as detailing, sustainability or adaptive use. The jury is comprised of distinguished architects from outside of Wisconsin. The projects are not judged in competition with each other, but rather by measuring the architect’s performance against each project’s potential.
