Zhongli Third Library ( Taoyuan Public Library Longgang Branch )

Conept 1: The inspiration from the old tree and the environment.

The lower entrance with green accents is reminiscent of the green tunnel by the old trees in the nearby landscape.

The opening in the North & South with moderate sunshading is organized to be the ‘Human’s Space', as for the solid walled space in the East & West side it is dedicated as the ‘Books’ Space’.

Concept 2: One book, one universe.

Library’s bookshelves are richly filled with various books. Each book actually encloses a particular world in its own, by opening the book a vast unexpected & exciting world is about to be uncovered.

The building’s exterior conveys its cultural content, the simple external texture is clearly readable.

Concept 3: Everybody’s reading, reading can be everywhere.

Within this library, everyone can find a private spot; a corner to locate one’s self & to be one’s self.

Ground floor, the green prelude.

Via the lower green tunnel the library can be entered. After traversing this intimate & accessible reading tunnel a dramatic spatial change in the form of a giant star lit staircase presents itself. While ascending the stair to reach the upper levels the visitors are experiencing a filtration transition of both the visual & the auditory.

Second floor, the incubating sprout chapter.

The seats of the periodicals area is sprawled in a pleasant unrestrained fashion. Through the patterned glazing the parents can view their children within the treehouse experiencing the fun of reading. The family toilet has the interior elements extended into it, simultaneously the outdoor greenery resonates in this space as well.

Third floor, the leafing chapter.

This floor is where the main collection is housed. Each collection’s space has its individual character. A spectrum of reading positions is available for the readers to choose from; sitting at the reading tables; crouch or lie on the floor while enjoying the landscape entering the interior via the North; even just lean against stair’s steps watching people pass by.

Fourth floor, the tranquility underneath the blue sky.

The skylight introduced the gentle light from the North, which substantially benefits the aspect of energy saving & the interior atmosphere. The material use is to reflect a pure & serene sensibility as the top floor in contact with the sky is gradually approached.

The return to essential material & the space of warmth.

The site is surrounded by intense elements like the green tunnel, sun, shadows, these are all fundamental key materials. The usage of plain & self-evidential building materials is to build further upon these materials already present at the site. The usage of rustic wood, paint, concrete, diacrete board, flax flooring, metal fixings with simple ornaments, glass is a reconnection to the essentials.
