Cal Poly Pomona architecture 3rd year graduate student Laida Aguirre will be exhibiting a piece she designed with artist Goro Tronsmo in a group show at Altes Postfuhramt West in Berlin, Germany. The opening of the exhibition will take place on September 14th at 7PM.
'A chair has a concrete use' is the manifestation of a set of rules that stem from the functionalist character of the Altes Post building. As part of two different exhibitions: ´Concrete Utopias´ and 'Macrocosmi-Systems of another order', the artists developed the space as a machine. By reinterpreting the exhibition titles and location, they created a response to the site as situation. The grid of the windows, the extrusions on the ceiling, the circulation of the building were all put into a formula that guided the creation of an architectural script.
To embody these rules the space is reinterpreted as a set of altered domestic spaces that hold the following functions: working, sleeping, dining, meeting, art dealing and hanging out. The installation is a questioning of the familiarity of traditional domestic programs, our immediate intuitions of their use and their correlation to movement.
Their work is a twofold extraction of institutional and architectural structures and part of an ongoing research and collaboration.
Goro Tronsmo is an artist working in Oslo, Stockholm and Berlin. Her work is concerned with extracting and staging institutional structures through context specific installations and events in the architectural conversions.
Laida Aguirre is an artist / architectural designer. Lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work takes the form of architecture, installations and printed media dealing with construction elements and raw materials as symbols of tectonic language of site.
