Hello,
I received my undergraduate degree in June of 2021, and am working towards my Masters of Science in architecture. I am projected to graduate in June of 2022. I have experience fabricating, researching biomaterials, and interviewing under ethical guidelines. I am interested in creative solutions to pressing issues like the housing crisis, disaster mitigation, and urban improvement.
CAED Shop, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, US, shop technician
Becoming fluent in the machinery and technology in CAED’s Fabrication Shops. Refined knowledge of Digital
Fabrication, Metal Working, Welding, Wood Working, and hand-operated tools. Experience teaching students how to
work with heavy equipment, and fixing files for digital fabrication. Construction of several tools around the shop.
Jen Shields, San Luis Obispo, CA, US, model maker
Used rhino, lasercutting, model assembly, and woodshop skills to construct a massing model of Hearst Castle that is displayed in the Julia Morgan exhibition on campus. The model is also planned to be included in Gordon Fugile's Morgan exhibition in Los Angeles a year from now.
Alex Hirsig, San Luis Obispo, CA, US, research assistant
Working in collaboration with architecture professor Alex Hirsig to research mycelium as an architectural material.
We are experimenting with different material substrates, constructing an informational website, designing a temporary
structure, and collaborating with various companies. We are focused on zero waste architectural solutions.
Carla Bechelli Arquitectos, Buenos Aires, AR, intern
Participated in the renovation and expansion of Hotel San Rafael in Punta Del Este: with client Cipriani and in collaboration with Rafael Vinoly. Worked on collaborative AutoCad, Rhino, and SketchUp files. Used the Adobe Creative Suite to market the Cipriani project’s incorporation of fashion boutiques for the Brazil publication. Paticipated in meetings with technicians.
AUM construction, Mendocino, CA, US, intern
Made as-builts with revit, and assisted the financial manager of Mendocino’s leading construction firm. Exposed to the wider context of the intersection between architecture and construction. Helped build an outdoor clay oven.
Build San Francisco Institute, San Francisco California, volunteer/speaker at hearing
Asked to speak at a hearing on behalf of the SF Build Institute in support of the 5th and Mission project in San Francisco. The project’s goals included improving the city’s open spaces within the urban fabric, and expanding affordable housing.
This opportunity made me understand the importance of architecture in society and the implications of spatial interventions within the man-made environment.
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, CA, US, Masters, Blended MSarch
The 5+1 masters program at cal poly offers undergraduate architecture students to do the first year of their masters coursework during their thesis year. This program gave me the opportunity to design a biological research center on abandoned platform holly in collaboration with Architectural Engineering students. I am also taking part in Kevin Dong and Tom Fowler's project to develop a university campus in Tanzania over the course of several years. This year, students are contributing to the design and construction of a four-classroom building inspired by vernacular architecture and available resources. My personal research project uses documentary film to understand how homes evolve with their aging occupants. It investigates the informal and formal adaptations that aging homeowners make to age in place.
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, CA, US, BArch, Architecture Undergraduate
Completed a five year program. Each quarter involved a design studio that evolved in intensity throughout the years. Students were exposed to fundamentals of architectural practice, theory, history, structural engineering, and opportunities for collaboration. The school promoted the creative instruction of analogue, digital, and fabrication skills.
As part of the fourth year abroad, I had the opportunity to travel around Italy and Switzerland that culminated in an intensive one month long collaborative design studio. In the fall of 2019, I continued my explorations and took part in the Tokyo program. We lived and did a 10 week design studio, and ventured around Japan for several week-long excursions. Through these programs, I got to directly experience the work of prominent architects and designers including Peter Zumthor, Herzog&Demeuron, Zaha Hadid, Sou Fujimoto, Tadao Ando, Rafael Vinoly, Sanaa, Calatrava, Naruse Inokuma Architects, and more. Prominent locations included Vals, the Vitra design museum, and Naoshima island.
New York Studio School, New York, NY, US, color theory summer intensive
We studied color theory through applied experiments inspired by the work of Josef Albers, and had in depth discussions of our observations. We saw the Albers archives at the Museum of modern art, and visited several galleries over the course of the program.
Build San Francisco Institute, San Francisco, CA, US, High School, summer course
This three week summer course introduced me to the world of architecture. We studied bridge structures, public spaces, and residential architecture. We got to work on individual and collaborative design projects using Revit and analogue tools. One of the projects included the design of public spaces inspired by San Francisco's 5th and Mission project. The project seeks to make the city more human, offering affordable housing and pockets of public space. We presented to several firms at the end of the program that were working on the 5M project.
